Five Signs Your Business Has Outgrown Spreadsheet Bookkeeping
Spreadsheets are a sensible starting point. These are the signals that it may be time to move to a more structured system.
By the Meridian advisory team (concept content)

Many businesses start by keeping their books in a spreadsheet. It is flexible, familiar and inexpensive. As transaction volumes grow, however, spreadsheets become harder to keep accurate.
The signs to watch for
- Reconciling bank and mobile money accounts takes days rather than hours.
- Several people edit the same file, and it is unclear which version is correct.
- You cannot easily see who owes you money, or for how long.
- Month-end reports take weeks to produce.
- Errors are discovered only when preparing tax filings or year-end accounts.
What a structured system offers
Accounting software provides a consistent structure, an audit trail of changes, bank feeds or imports and standard reports. The right choice depends on your size, industry and budget, and there is no single correct product.
Note: Moving systems is a good moment to tidy up your chart of accounts and opening balances. A careful transition avoids carrying old errors into the new system.
